Cheap Canadian cell phone plan
« on: October 08, 2014, 06:48:35 AM »
Is there such a thing, or is it an oxymoron? I am currently with Bell, $68/month, but I am thinking of trying to get out of it. I think I have about a year remaining on the contract. I have an Iphone 4, would like to keep it, if possible.

Well...I have a pre-paid plan with Rogers at 100$/year plus top ups if I use my phone more. Obviously I don't use my phone often. The clerk at Rogers said that they have a 100$/year plan that includes free texting. You could do some combination of a pre-paid plan and using free Wi-Fi. I guess it depends on how much you use your phone and what you're doing with it. Is there Wi-Fi at work/school? Is your phone unlocked?

HI, if Tai's answer is truly per year and not a typo (per month), his plan RULES.

From my experience, Petro Canada is also pretty cheap. First make sure your Iphone is unlocked, either pay your provider or do it for free by searching youtube.

Next go to any Petro Canada and buy a new sim card for ~$12. Replace sim in your phone and hop online to http://mobility.petro-canada.ca/default.aspx set up account and buy some minutes (can also be done in some petro can stores). Their cheapest "Anytime plan" (pay as you go) is $15/month. I prefer the next tier up which is $25 but lasts for 3 months (100$/year).

They also have a prepaid monthly plans depending on your needs.

Right now there is a year end special @ 30$ for 100 minutes Canada wide calling/unlimited texts + 500mg data, if data is needed.

Couple this with freephoneline.ca for voip home phone (which can be set to forward to your cell) and, at least in my case, all bases are covered.

cheers

Not a typo, but if you're using the phone a lot you'll burn through the minutes. The Petro Canada deal sounds similar, maybe compare the rates for calls/texts on both plans? I don't have the 100$/year with free texts plan myself, the clerk mentioned it last week at the Rogers store but I haven't looked into it myself...yet.

I use Chatr for $22.40/month after taxes for a basic plan. No need for a smartphone.

I found the $100/year plan, but it looks like it only includes 100 minutes for the year. http://rogers.com/web/content/wireless-products/paygo_promotions_monthlydiscount

I will look into the Petro Can and Chatr plans as well. I don't use my phone much, which is why I want to get out of my plan.

Before I got my Iphone, I had a flip phone from 7-11 Speak Out, so I will research that too. First step is finding out how much it is going to cost me to get out of my contract.

Fido is the smaller, friendlier company that uses Rogers infrastructure, and they also have some dirt cheap prepaid plans.
Astoundingly, my ability to do basic math is not impeded by the presence of a dollar sign in front of the numbers.

I'm with Rogers on a granny plan for $14/mo. My iPad and Rogers one number supplement my needs.
I'd be with wind mobile if they offered it in my area.

I'm with Virgin Mobile prepaid for $25 per month. I get a few minutes (never used all of them), unlimited texting, and 100 MB of data (leave it off and use Wi-Fi most of the time but nice to have sometimes). The coverage has been good out here in a Vancouver suburb.

Agreed. Neither Wind or Chatr are in my town.

I'm happy with my Koodo plan. My base plan is 15 per month, unlimited texting. You can then buy talk and/or data boosters. (5c per minute talk, $30 for 1 gig data, no expiry date if you keep your base plan).

Since there's wifi almost everywhere now, I haven't even used up my first data booster yet and I bought it a year ago. My plan is explained here: http://koodomobile.com/en/on/plansandboosters.shtml

Right now I'm on WInd with free unlimited province wide calling, unlimited texting, and unlimited DATA for $30/month.

I don't call or text much and I'm usually in a WIFI zone, so I've been trying to get up the guts to switch to 7-11 SpeakOut pay as you go. Their credits are all good for a year (with most pay as you go places you need ot buy the $100 credit to have it good for the year.) and they have a $25 credit.

So the cheapest I've found is $25 / year if you barely use it. The $1.25 or something 911 fee comes out of this every month.

After one year with Virgin, I still had about $80 on my account when they forced me to topup. So instead I cut the home line and switched to Wind. Data has been fun, but I don't know if it's really worth it to me. I'm planning on turning data off my phone for a month to see how it goes.

I have had no issues with Petro Canada for the 2 years I've been with them. I've been using their $25 for 100 mins for 3 months plan, and bought the phone outright through them at the start.

Looks like RedStache explained anything else you need to know.

Petro Canada is great, my parents use that.

I am with WIND - my wife and I are on the grandfathered pay-as-you-go plans. I have the unlimited texting and unlimited wind-to-wind addons, and she has unlimited texting. We both get unlimited incoming. Total cost: $10/mo for me, $5/mo for her. Since we typically text our friends or receive calls or I call her, that's usually all we pay, $15/mo plus tax.

But WIND's current plans are pretty good if you want unlimited calling and data.

I'm with 711. They offer really cheap prepaid plans. I have a 100$ Prepaid plan, which is valid for a year and gives you 400 airtime minutes. https://speakout7eleven.ca/prepaid-cell-phone-rates#talk-rates. I also have an iPhone 4S (got out of a contract with Bell) and just got their SIM card.

How much did you have to pay to get out of your contract, and did you have to pay Bell to unlock your phone?

I paid $50 to get the phone unlocked. As for the early termination charges, I don't remember exactly, but it was definitely over $100. However, it was so worth it and I don't regret it at all! My plan was about $55 a month and I didn't use my phone enough to justify the expense.
