Is MMM posting less and less frequently on the blog?
« on: August 12, 2014, 09:21:23 AM »
I've been reading the blog for... well, a long time now, and it seems like MMM's posting frequency has gone way down. I haven't gone back to look, but it felt like we used to get multiple posts per week. Now we can sometimes go as long as a week or two between posts.

I don't recall him saying anything on the blog about being busy traveling or working or whatever... just curious... and looking forward to the next blog post! :)

FWIW, I recognize that MMM can post as frequently or infrequently as he would like. This isn't a demand or a complaint or anything of the sort. I'm just curious. :)

I noticed the same thing. And just when I started reading, too. But he's FIRE'd, so he can do what he wants. I'm just glad he doesn't charge for this stuff like seemingly everyone else. Though I would definitely buy a MMM book...

I suspect its because there just isn't that much more to write about. There is only so much financial and frugality information out there, and he has covered a shitload of it. After awhile, you end up repeating yourself. I see it on the forums too...collectively, we've learned (almost) all we can, all that's left to do is execute the plans and become rich and happy and retire.

I remember reading that he (a) was going on vacation for the summer, and would be posting less and (b) wasn't going to feel obligated to post as much this summer anyway because, well, he doesn't have to if he doesn't want to.

I love reading new posts just as much as the next guy, but the content that's already out there is sufficient. There's plenty of interim entertainment here on the forums.

They were also moving into the new house.

I'm really looking forward to the posts about how all of the energy efficiency upgrades work out with the new place.

I traded a couple of emails with him a month or so ago and the impression I got was that he wanted to make sure his family and friends and "workcation" back home in Canada all came first before the blog or blog-related business. I think he was keeping busy doing fun stuff and didn't want to treat the blog as a full time job. Understandable!

I'd just like to see some more MMM videos! I just found the Yahoo finance one and it was awesome. Wish he'd do more - It's the next best thing to meeting him in person.

+1. I've thought this for a while - all the really important stuff has been discussed. Some of it was really interesting to me at the time that I first read it. But now it's less interesting, because it's all just variations of the same theme.

While the blog becomes less useful for me personally, the forum remains useful as a sort of day-to-day guide or reminder to keep me on the straight and narrow.

I don't believe this is the case. I recall several of his posts (sorry no links) talking about how he has more ideas and topics than he has time. I recall him listing a bunch of ideas for different articles. I think it's what everyone else has said, the blog isn't his top priority.

Crossfit Real or just another fad?

I'll take a brief swing at this one.

Real. I've been crossfitting on-and-off (life events had led to off times) for around 6 years now. Before that, I followed a variety of training programs going as far back as starting weight lifting in middle school. There is nothing that I have seen that provides the same level of benefit and result in a similar time as Crossfit. I've had conversations with friends who are personal trainers unaffiliated from Crossfit, and they echo that sentiment.

By the constantly varied programming, Crossfit hits many different aspects of fitness and improves all of them across the board. At the same time, done correctly, it is scaled to an individual's capability and allows them to grow as their skills progress. One of my workout partners over the years was a 130 lbs man looking to add strength and bulk. Another was a 300 lbs woman looking to drop weight and get fit. I'm somewhere in between the two. All of us saw major progress toward our goals through Crossfit (coupled with eating right).

Thanks for that! Wish we had a Crossfit place here. Till then I'll have to stick to the walk a little, play a little, sprint a little and lift heavy things once a week. Umm, the last two will have to wait until I drop another 15 pounds as I don't want to kill myself just yet.

Thanks for the list, Bob. I pasted it into my "blog topics" spreadsheet. It's down around row 110 though. Lots of ideas above it in my list of things to talk about. I imagine MMM is the same way (more to say than time to write it).

You seem to be missing the point here. He's not lacking for topics, he's just spending his time on other projects that he deems of higher priority. You know, like living his life or working with people face-to-face instead of trying to scale up the Internet.

Your topic suggestions are analogous to going over to a friend's house to watch the game, kicking back on the sofa with a frosty beverage, looking around the room, and saying "Ya know, if you put a little more effort into this place then it could really look nice. Luckily I can take a few minutes of my time to suggest a number of contractors who'd be willing to help you with painting, carpeting, lighting, decorating, cleaning, new furniture, and, oh yeah, a better selection of frosty beverages. If you sub it out then you'd hardly have to do any of the work."

If you sub out those topics then you'd have your own blog with only 20 hours of work. And if you post them in the right order then you can also feed the whole database into an app that will help you publish your eBook.

Going to a box with good coaches really makes a difference though, especially if you don't have the foundation. Getting corrections on form while you work is much more helpful than getting it from the CF forum after the fact.

I was in it for 4 years; the box grew to a huge size during that time frame. Lots of hands on with the owners in the beginning, less as they had baby 1 and then 2. Other coaches varied from very great to eh.

Now we moved and I don't get a grandfathered price rate, so screw that. We'll pay $75 a month for the family membership at the Y, saving a ton of money, and I can use the 1 Oly platform to get in my heavy lifts. Just won't be able to do as many heavy metcons as I used to. I'm OK with this.

I think it's what everyone else has said, the blog isn't his top priority.
Yep, definitely think it's this. Between finishing the house, moving, holidaying and all that, who'd have time to write a blog. He tweeted a few days ago that after two weeks of no blogging he had already started to get emails complaining. I think lots of people really don't get what MMM is all about, i.e. doing stuff because you want to, it's fun, it suits your schedule now etc. with a bonus side-effect of helping/informing/entertaining others and earning a bit of money from it. I've seen the same thing on other blogs, too - when people are used to quite frequent posting, they sometimes seem to develop the idea that they are entitled to frequent posting but so long as you're not actually paying money for a service, I don't understand how you can develop that feeling of entitlement. Especially not to the point of actually sending someone an email to complain about them not posting! (As opposed to the more rational, just curious tone of this thread say)

Here are some topics off the top of my head that either he or guest writers could easily cover - Easily 6 months of material. If he subs it out, it might take him 20 hours of work.

Thank you for your response.

Analogy taken!

Fact is I don't watch games on TV and since I'm a past life home builder my friends and family ask me often for ideas and contractor recommendations. So that analogy made me smile a little.

I remember MMM saying that he was running out of new ideas after doing this for a number of years. (i.e. lacking for topics). Although, he didn't straight forward ask for ideas, he may have been fishing for them. I would think that a blog steward of this type would like to hear back from readers on topics they are interested in and not find it offensive that someone would share topics of interest.

Additionally, for the blog to live on and grow it would make sense to use a writing team rather than it all be DIY.

This forum often brings up topics that are of interest to many readers and have not been covered in the front page blog. One in particular, for those interested in FI is Long Term Care Insurance. Since you read the forums, do you see any topics that you would like to see covered on the front page?

Thanks for the suggestion on the ebook! I didn't realize that was possible.

Thanks for your thoughts.

At some point it will make sense for him to do something similar to Jacob at ERE and have a rotation of past posts.

I think that was probably part of the motivation for the blog redesign a few months back. Now, the main page has a cycling list of "featured articles" that you see before you scroll down to see the latest one... and right next to the latest posts are a selection of "mmm classics." All of this makes it easier for first-timers, of course, but it also provides an easy way for him to highlight older posts.

Like I said earlier: No complaints from me! He can post as frequently or infrequently as he likes. I was just curious, since the last long pause I remember was led into by some explanatory posts talking about what he had coming up. This time, he mentioned a while back that he'd be busy for the next couple weeks... but that was quite a while ago.

If he's just taking a break to enjoy other parts of his life, more power to him! :)

Hmm, I don't remember that -- in fact he seems to often talk about how he has over a hundred items in his drafts folder and there seem to be more ideas everywhere he looks.

I think it's definitely a case that he's got other shit to do. More power to him.

I finally checked his twitter feed and see that he's been in Ecuador for the Chautauqua. He'll probably have a few interesting tidbits to share with us all from that once he's back to posting here. :)

Another +1 for Bob's list. I'd be interested in hearing others weigh in on some of those. The ones at the top about influencing kids/teens is very applicable to me.
